State Rep. David Martin’s plan to make Michigan students more aware of their career and post-secondary education options following high school was approved unanimously by the House Education Committee.

Martin, of Davison, said his measure will make sure Michigan teenagers are well-aware of all options when considering their next steps in life.

“As our kids make important life choices about what to do after high school, we should make sure they are well-informed about all of their options,” Martin said. “Not all paths to success hinge on a four-year college degree. Many young people would prefer trade school or public service, and I want to make sure they have all of the information they need to make the best personal choice.”

House Bill 4953 requires the Michigan Department of Education to compile a packet describing options for post-secondary education, vocational training, and public service avenues that students can consider as a career when looking to the future. Information would also be included regarding college graduation rates, average education costs, the most in-demand occupations, and average salaries for occupations across Michigan the preceding year.

“There are many, many great-paying jobs in the skilled trades that are in demand right now,” Martin said. “There are also jobs that require a graduate degree and years of commitment that are harder to come by. High school students should have access to all of this information.”

The plan now advances to the full House for consideration.
