Youth share positive impact of county fair activities

State Rep. Julie Alexander, chair of the House Agriculture Committee, welcomed the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibition and FFA students Wednesday to deliver a presentation to the committee regarding COVID-19 challenges on local fairs.

Also presenting were representatives from the Oakland and Shiawassee fairs who shared how the Governor’s Executive Orders prevented normal fair activities.

In 2020, Michigan State University Extension canceled all face-to-face activities for its programs, including 4-H, as a result of the state pandemic orders. As demonstrated in 2020 by local community innovations, Alexander believes fairs and youth activities should be held in 2021.

“In spite of the governor’s restrictions that prohibited allowing fairs in 2020, local communities were resilient and worked together to make them happen on their own,” Alexander said. “Even more resilient are the youth who showed and presented despite challenges.

“Fairs are an invaluable teaching tool and experience for Michigan’s young people to lay a foundation for a successful future.”
