State Rep. Ken Borton on Friday slammed Governor Whitmer’s proposal to raise the cost of Michigan hunting and fishing licenses to increase DNR funding. The change would increase the cost of all license fees.
“This is absolutely ridiculous,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “What we’re talking about here is an unacceptable new tax on Michiganders for attempting to enjoy the outdoors. If the DNR is truly in such a desperate need for more funding, I would love a public explanation with receipts as to where all the current money is being spent.”
Borton serves as chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee and vice chair of the Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy Appropriations Subcommittee.
“What we need more than anything is accountability,” Borton said. “I want transparency. We can’t allow the DNR to profit off basic sportsman activities when they won’t even tell us where our money is being spent.”
