State Rep. Cam Cavitt today voted on a bill package that will lower energy costs for Michigan families.

House Bills 5710 and 5711 remove regulatory burdens on electric and natural gas providers under the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). The bills would eliminate renewable energy mandates that have significantly driven up utility costs for working families across the state. Along with this, the bills would prohibit the use of customer utility payments to fund outside advocacy groups, and they would require transparency when utilities seek approval from the MPSC to increase their rates. Through both bills, Michigan families would save nearly $1,400 each year through lower property taxes and lower electric bills.

“This solution was long overdue,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “Households have been paying soaring costs on their utilities due to energy mandates imposed by Democrats. Our energy policy needs to focus on delivering power to Michiganders that is both affordable and consistent. For too long, energy mandates have been preventing us from achieving either. That ends now.”

Cavitt continued by highlighting the importance of the energy industry to the communities of Northern Michigan.

“Our community is centered around energy production,” Cavitt said. “Oil and natural gas are core industries here. These sectors provide good-paying jobs to hard workers, and they remain central to the community. The last thing they need is excessive government mandates impeding their important work.”

House Bills 5710 and 5711 now head to the Senate for further consideration.
