Rep. Damoose supports plan to ensure timely access to SOS services
RELEASE|July 1, 2021

State Rep. John Damoose and the Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a plan to require a walk-in option for Secretary of State services and extend the validity of licenses, identification cards and vehicle registrations.

“Although we are finally reopening and returning to normal, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has decided to keep her appointment-only system — permanently,” said Damoose, of Harbor Springs. “I have heard from so many people in Northern Michigan who have struggled to reserve an appointment, and many of them would be willing to wait in line for walk-in assistance instead of dealing with the messy online or phone appointment system. Getting Michigan back to normal must include full access to essential services.”

Senate Bills 507-509 would prohibit the Department of State from charging late renewal fees for documents such as vehicle registrations and driver’s licenses unless each branch office offers walk-in services any day the office is open. Additionally, driver’s licenses, personal ID cards and vehicle registrations expiring between March 31 and Aug. 1 would be valid for an additional 120 days.

“With so many residents struggling to book appointments, it’s only fair to give them extra time to renew their licenses and registrations,” Damoose said.

The bills received overwhelming bipartisan support in the House and now proceed again to the Senate for consideration.
