State Rep. Jaime Greene celebrated the successful House vote on a bill she sponsored that demonstrates support for Michigan National Guard members.

House Bill 4279 would create the Michigan National Guard Apprenticeship Act, which would require the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) to create and operate a Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard apprenticeship program. The bill would allow the completed training of National Guard members to count toward a registered apprenticeship credential from the United States Department of Labor.

“This vote was a basic step, but it was overdue,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “As lawmakers, we have a duty to let those in service know that we are here to support them. An easier path to an apprenticeship credential is just one way in which we can begin to repay our National Guard members for all they do. This bill is not a new spending program; it’s a way recognize and credential our Guard members for all their hard work.”

Greene, who served in the Navy, went on to applaud the bipartisan support that the bill received.

“It shouldn’t be a matter of partisan politics,” Greene said. “I’m glad that Democrats wanted to work with us to show our full support to those who have dedicated their lives to serving our country and our state.”

House Bill 4279 passed the House with significant bipartisan support, 99-9. The bill has now moved to the Senate for further consideration.
