State Rep. Phil Green today welcomed the announcement of new growth opportunities he has fought to secure for Lapeer and Tuscola counties.
Recently signed federal law permanently renewed investment incentives for eligible rural communities through Rural Opportunity Zones. State governors can nominate certain areas for this designation every 10 years.
Green previously worked with the governor’s office to secure nominations for a pair of areas – one near Lapeer and another near Caro just north of Vassar in Tuscola County. Green represents Lapeer and part of Tuscola County as part of the 67th House District. Michigan could nominate a maximum of just 25 percent of eligible tracts for designation, underscoring the unique opportunity for the area.
“This will provide investors and local leaders with a long-term path to bringing transformational projects and jobs to our communities through new businesses, housing, infrastructure upgrades, and more,” Green said. “Too often, communities like ours have been overlooked despite having a diverse and eager workforce, sound local policies, and existing manufacturing capabilities. Michigan has a rich tradition of providing for the now and building the future. This announcement puts Lapeer and Tuscola counties in a tremendous position to lead on these fronts, and I look forward to what’s ahead.”
According to federal figures, over 6,500 eligible census tracts nationwide were nominated to become Opportunity Zones. The designation will be effective Jan. 1, 2027, when Green begins his fifth term in the Michigan House.
